One way around this clean up work, especially if you want to use the old file to create more than one project, is to save the old project as a template. You have the option of stripping out all that progress information as you save it, leaving only tasks and resources behind.

Project 2007 includes many default templates that you can use. Additional templates are available on Microsoft templates. If your organization has its own custom templates, it may store them on its corporate intranet. Follow these steps to access any of these templates.
Provides a framework for developing processes to monitor customer feedback as part of a continuous improvement effort. This template is focused on processes to monitor feedback after it has been collected. It has a limited amount of direction on data collection.
Addresses the general activities that define the typical quarterly or annual performance review cycle. This template assumes a performance review process has been established and that performance is not tied to compensation.
Presents a plan that helps to identify training needs, develop training solutions, and deploy internal training programs. The template focuses on internal training for sales purposes, but the general framework can be used for other training as well.
Comes from the Process Model for Application Development, a key component of the Microsoft Solutions Framework (MSF). This flexible model improves project control, minimizes risk, improves product quality, and increases development speed in the software industry.
Outlines a strategic approach for product development. By working with your business position in the marketplace, establishing product infrastructure, and leveraging knowledge of your targets and competitors, this template establishes a framework to begin product development.
Addresses the general activities for reviewing existing internal controls and evaluating potential technology options for more efficient Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Section 404 Compliance. This project assumes that the organization is already SOX compliant.
Includes the basic tasks required to construct a multiple-story commercial space, and shows the relationships between those tasks. You can use the template strictly as a training tool or to guide development of custom schedules for your projects, or you can modify the template and use it as the basis for an initial project schedule.
Provides a sample E-Government application for a state or local government agency. The sample application is an electronic payment system, an example of a Government to Citizen e-Gov project. It is organized as a program with three projects (Technical Architecture, Security Extranet, and e-Payment), demonstrating one way of organizing complex projects.
Helps you identify the normal activities required for an effective engineering project and link them into a typical schedule format. You can use this template for training, or modify it and use it as the basis for an initial project schedule.
Includes the basic tasks required to construct a single-family home and the logical relationships between those tasks. You can use this template for training, to develop custom schedules for your projects, or as the basis for an initial project schedule.
Use project planning templates to get your project going faster. Organize tasks and milestones while facilitating communication by using templates product development, marketing, business plans, goals, and employee onboarding.
A project planning template is a document that follows a standard format based on the type of project and helps define the scope and objectives with a list of essential elements such as stakeholders, scope, timelines, estimated costs, and methods of communication with team members.
Project plan templates actually do much more than help you plan a project. They help you manage it, track information such as costs and timelines, and lets you see the big picture and communicate important information to people on your team.
There are many different types of project planning templates. Chances are the type of project or project management style you use will have planning templates. These range from Agile to Scrum and Kanban to Waterfall and everywhere in-between.
A project template is a predefined framework that helps you quickly and easily start a project. You can use a predefined template to create a new project with a single click. As for projects, you must define the prerequisites for project templates. You must define a project calendar for each project template, and roles and price lists must be predefined in the organization, so that the components of the template have useful data.
A schedule in a project template has the same set of elements as a schedule in a project. You can create a task hierarchy, associate roles with tasks, define schedule attributes, and set dependencies. A schedule in a project template also supports task modes for each task. Therefore, it supports the scheduling engine. You must associate a project calendar with the project. When you create a work schedule, there is no difference between a project template and a project.
Project estimates in a project template work the same way as project estimates in a project. However, the cost and sales prices are pulled from the default cost and sales price lists that are defined in the parameters.
When you copy the schedule from a project template, if the project has a different project calendar than the template, work hours from the project's calendar are applied to the task schedule. In this way, the schedule is adjusted to match the backing project calendar. Similarly, the first task on the schedule takes the project's start date, and the schedule of the rest of the hierarchy is updated based on the duration and dependencies that are specified in the template.
When you copy across project estimate lines, the price lists are updated. For the cost price list, these updates are based on the owning unit of the project. For the sales price list, they are based on the customer. For projects that are associated with a sales entity, the unit cost and sales prices are determined based on these price lists.
When a project team is copied from a project template to a project, the generic resources are copied, together with the skills and proficiencies that are defined in the template. Generic resource assignments are also maintained as they were in the project template. Named resources aren't supported in project templates.
Templates for project management help you keep project managers and their teams productive by simplifying the processes that go into project planning, budgeting, and scheduling. In addition, project management templates also provide the following advantages to companies that implement them:
Anyone from beginners needing real-world experience with project plans to experienced planners and PMs who need to upgrade their project management processes use templates to streamline their project efficiency and visibility.
You can use project templates in a variety of circumstances, including for software development projects, website launches, conferences and events, marketing campaigns, construction and contractor-based projects, human resources projects, and even government jobs.
Clean up any existing project information that was inputted as an example, and fill in the spaces with details relevant to your own project. For example, set working hours, holidays, and employee schedules in a monthly calendar template, or add project summaries and task lists in a project charter template.
Once completed, save the project and update it as needed or as your project or version changes. For a more in-depth look at how to create a project timeline in Microsoft Project, or MS Project licensing information, check out this guide.
Microsoft Project is a strong planning tool but produces complex Gantt charts that are difficult for audiences to follow. In this tutorial, we demonstrate two options for preparing project plans as PowerPoint presentations:
After you click on the Gantt Chart Wizard button, the first styling option you get is to select what type of Gantt information you want to display. For client and executive presentations, keep project visuals simple to understand by displaying only Standard information.
Now you need to create an image that you can copy and paste into PowerPoint. Microsoft Project has a feature called Copy Picture which allows you to choose which tasks you want to show on your visual. This is useful for paring down project tasks to the ones that are critical for your presentation.
Many tools on the market offer either a free version, a freemium model or a free trial. After you try them out and depending on the complexity of your project, it might be better to consider investing in a decently priced app that will save you time and money in the long run.
- [Narrator] Project's built in elements like views, tables, filters, and settings are stored in a file called the global template. To make sure customizations are available when you want them, it's important to understand where Projects stores customizations and how to manage them with the organizer. So let's go to the file tab. Because I have a Project file open, when I go to the file tab, Project takes me to the info page, and that's where the organizer button is. The organizer let's you manage elements in your project files and the global template. The organizer dialog box has all sorts of tabs at the top for the different elements that you have available and that you can manage with the organizer. Now on the left side, you see what's available in the global template. That's a template file that stores the built-in elements that Project provides. It's called global.mpt. Now on the right side, you'll see what's in your active project. If you look closely, you'll notice that there are some things on the right side that are also on the left side. So there's a Gantt chart view on both sides. What happens is, if you make changes to a view or a table or filter in your active Project file, the program will create a copy of the definition in your active file so that the definition in the global template remains unchanged. Also, if you look at the bottom, there are two boxes, and it will say views available in or tables available in. Now on the left side, initially it's set to the global template, and on the right side, you'll see your active project. The thing is, if you click the down arrow, you will see all of your open Project files as well as the global template. It turns out you can copy between the global template and a Project file or between two Project files. So let's say that I go over to the left side and click the down arrow and choose project two. Then I can copy between these two Project files. I can select the leveling Gantt in project one, and when I click copy, it copies it over to project two. Well let's go ahead and click the x to close the organizer. There's a Project option for where things get saved. So I'm gonna click on the file tab, I'll click options, then in the Project options dialog box, I'm gonna click advanced. When I scroll to the display section, you'll see that there's a check box, automatically add new views, tables, filters, and groups to the global, and it's turned on by default. What that means is if you create a new element, Project will save it automatically to your global template so it's available to all of your projects. That's usually what you want. So let's click OK to close the Project options dialog box. Now, I'm going to create a new view. I'm gonna click the other views button on the view tab, and then on the menu, choose save view. I'm just gonna call it something as a sample, modified view, and then click OK. You can see the name over on the left side, so I've applied the view to this project. Now let's take a look at the organizer. I'm gonna go back to the file tab, and click the organizer button. Notice that not only is modified view in the active project, but it's also saved in the global template, so it's available to all of my Project files. Now you saw how to copy things between files. You can also rename elements and delete them. The one thing about copying and deleting elements is you can't do that if the element is in use. Let's try selecting modified view in project one. If I click delete, and then it asks if I'm sure IF I want to delete it, and I click yes, I get this message that it's in use and can't be copied or deleted. It tells you what you have to do is close the organizer, switch to a different view, and then you can go back into the organizer and delete it. There are a few techniques for managing elements using the organizer. 2ff7e9595c
